What does a utility bill estimator calculate?

A bill estimate shows how usage, rate, fixed charges, and tax combine into the monthly and annual cost.

A utility bill has a few standard components: an energy charge (usage times rate), a fixed charge that appears regardless of usage, and sometimes a tax or rider. Understanding how they combine lets you budget for coming months, check whether your bill looks correct, and compare what different usage levels would cost.

This estimator focuses on electricity, where the rate is quoted per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Natural gas rates quoted per therm or per MJ can be entered after converting to the per-kWh equivalent – the FAQ explains the conversion. Water volume estimation is a planned follow-up; this release covers energy.

The annual figure assumes the same monthly bill for all twelve months, which is a rough estimate for seasonal usage. For a more accurate annual projection, sum monthly estimates individually.

How to estimate a utility bill

The formula, how rate and usage interact, and why the rate field is always in $/kWh.

Formula

monthly = (usage kWh x rate $/kWh + fixed charge) x (1 + tax% / 100)

How the formula works

Energy charge = usage (converted to kWh) x rate ($/kWh). Subtotal = energy charge + fixed charge. Monthly total = subtotal x (1 + tax% / 100). Annual = monthly x 12.

The energy dimension stores all values in kWh. When you enter usage in therms or MJ, the calculator converts it to kWh before the formula runs: 1 therm = 29.3001 kWh (DOE/EIA); 1 MJ = 1/3.6 kWh. This means the rate field must always be in dollars per kWh, not per therm or per MJ.

Rate conversion for gas billed per therm

If your gas utility quotes a rate per therm (a common U.S. billing unit), convert it to per kWh by dividing by 29.3001. Example: $1.50/therm / 29.3001 = $0.0512/kWh. Enter the result in the rate field, then enter your usage in therms. The energy charge will be correct.

Fixed charge

Most utilities include a base charge that appears every month regardless of usage. On your bill it may be labeled customer charge, meter fee, distribution charge, or service charge. Find this line on your bill and enter it in the fixed charge field.

Tax and riders

Enter the percentage applied to your bill as a sales tax, utility tax, or similar surcharge. If the tax is already included in the quoted rate, leave this field at 0. Some utilities show riders and adjustments that are effectively part of the rate; if so, incorporate them into the rate or fixed charge rather than the tax field.

Rounding and bill accuracy

Utility tariffs include tiered rates, time-of-use pricing, demand charges, and rounding conventions that this estimator does not model. The result is a first-order estimate. Confirm the rate, fixed charge, and tax against your utility’s current tariff schedule before using the figure for anything more than a sanity check.

FAQ

How does the rate field work with different energy units?

The rate field couples to the usage unit you choose: when usage is in kWh, enter your $/kWh rate; when usage is in therms, enter your $/therm rate; when usage is in MJ, enter your $/MJ rate. The label on the rate field updates to show the current unit. No manual conversion is needed.

What is the fixed charge?

Most utility bills include a flat fee each month regardless of usage: a customer charge, meter fee, or distribution charge. Find it on your bill as a line item separate from the energy charge. Enter 0 if your bill does not have one or if it is already included in the rate.

How do I handle utility taxes?

Enter the percentage tax rate applied to your bill. If the tax is already included in the per-kWh rate on your bill, enter 0. If your bill shows a separate sales or utility tax line, divide that amount by the subtotal and multiply by 100 to get the percentage, or check your utility tariff.

How do I estimate a gas bill billed in therms?

Switch the usage unit to therm. The rate label changes to $/therm. Enter your usage in therms and your rate in dollars per therm, exactly as shown on your gas bill. The calculator handles the unit conversion internally.

Will this match my actual bill exactly?

Probably not exactly. Utility tariffs include tiered rates, time-of-use pricing, demand charges, rider adjustments, and rounding conventions that vary by utility and rate class. Use this estimate to sanity-check your bill and understand its approximate structure. Confirm the rate, fixed charge, and tax on your utility's tariff schedule before relying on a figure.
