What is a gravel tonnage estimate?
Gravel and crushed stone are sold by the short ton (2,000 pounds) in the United States, not by volume, because the material’s density and moisture content cause the same weight to occupy different volumes depending on how it is handled. Quarries weigh the loaded truck, subtract the empty weight, and invoice the difference.
The tonnage estimate starts from geometric volume: length times width times depth. That volume, in cubic feet, multiplied by the bulk density of the material gives weight in pounds. Dividing by 2,000 converts to short tons. Bulk density is the key variable: crushed limestone and granite run around 100 pounds per cubic foot; lighter, rounder materials like pea gravel run 95 to 96 pounds per cubic foot. Confirm the density with your supplier before finalizing an order.
This calculator does not account for compaction. Gravel placed on a prepared subgrade and compacted will settle 10 to 15 percent, meaning the delivered depth will be less than the placed depth. If you need a specific finished depth after compaction, order 10 to 15 percent more than this calculator returns.
How to calculate gravel tonnage

tons = (length ft x width ft x depth in / 12 x density lb/cu ft) / 2000
How the formula works
Cubic feet = length ft x width ft x (depth in / 12). Pounds = cubic feet x density (lb/cu ft). Short tons = pounds / 2,000. The depth is entered in inches and divided by 12 to convert to feet before multiplying. All three spatial dimensions combine to give cubic feet of material, which is then scaled by bulk density to pounds and converted to the U.S. commercial unit for bulk stone.
Bulk density
Bulk density is the weight per unit volume of the material as it would be delivered in a truck or placed on the ground, not the density of the individual stone particles. Common values:
- Crushed stone (limestone, granite): 95 to 105 lb/cu ft; 100 lb/cu ft is a standard estimate
- Pea gravel: 90 to 96 lb/cu ft
- River rock: 90 to 100 lb/cu ft
- Sand: 95 to 110 lb/cu ft (varies more with moisture)
Your supplier’s material data sheet or invoice often lists the weight per cubic yard; divide by 27 to convert to per cubic foot.
Short ton vs. metric ton
This calculator uses the short ton (2,000 pounds), the U.S. standard for bulk materials. A metric ton (tonne) is 2,204.6 pounds. To convert short tons to metric tons, multiply by 0.9072.
Compaction
This calculation gives the volume and weight before compaction. Compacted gravel settles 10 to 15 percent. If a finished depth of 4 inches after compaction is required, order for a depth of 4.5 to 4.7 inches and confirm the compaction factor with your contractor.

FAQ
How do I know the right density to use?
Bulk density varies by material, particle size, moisture content, and how tightly the material is packed. Common crushed limestone and granite run 95 to 105 lb per cubic foot; pea gravel and rounded river rock are slightly lighter at 90 to 100 lb/cu ft. Sand and screenings are heavier. Your supplier's invoice or product data sheet often lists the material's bulk density or weight per cubic yard; divide by 27 to convert to per cubic foot. When in doubt, use 100 lb/cu ft as a conservative estimate and confirm the final quantity with the supplier.
Is this a short ton or a metric ton?
This calculator uses the short ton, the standard U.S. commercial unit: 1 short ton = 2,000 pounds. Most U.S. quarries and landscape suppliers quote in short tons. A metric ton (tonne) is 2,204.6 pounds. To convert tons from this calculator to metric tons, multiply by 0.907.
My supplier quotes in cubic yards, not tons. How do I convert?
Divide the weight in pounds by (density in lb/cu ft × 27) to get cubic yards. At 100 lb/cu ft, one cubic yard weighs 2,700 pounds or 1.35 tons. To convert the volume this calculator shows in cubic feet to cubic yards, divide by 27. Many suppliers offer both ton and yard pricing; tons are more accurate because the actual delivered weight is metered.
Should I account for compaction?
This calculator gives the volume and weight of material as delivered, before compaction. Gravel compacts 10 to 15 percent for driveways and paths. If you need a finished depth of 4 inches after compaction, you may need to order 15 to 20 percent more than the raw calculation shows. Consult your site contractor for the appropriate compaction factor for your application and subgrade.
