Running Pace Calculator

Find your running pace, finish time, or distance from any two of the three, with race-distance shortcuts and speed in mph and km/h.

Running pace
Enter any two of distance, time, and pace to get the rest, plus your speed.

Pick what you want to find, then enter the other two.

mi

Enter as h:mm:ss, for example 0:30:00.

What does a running pace calculator tell me?

It links distance, time, and pace so you can find any one from the other two, plus your speed.

Distance, time, and pace are three sides of the same triangle: give any two and the third is fixed. A pace calculator does that math for you and also shows your speed in miles per hour and kilometers per hour, so you can plan a goal, check a workout, or match a treadmill.

Pick what you want to find. Enter a distance and a time to get your pace. Enter a distance and a pace to get your finish time. Enter a time and a pace to get how far you went. The race-distance shortcuts fill in the exact standard lengths (a half marathon is 21.0975 km, a marathon is 42.195 km), so you do not have to remember them.

The result assumes a steady, even pace over the whole distance. Real races drift with hills, heat, and fatigue, so use the number as your average target and leave a little room for the hard parts. Times use hours:minutes:seconds and paces use minutes:seconds, the same way your watch shows them.

How does this pace calculator work?

It divides or multiplies distance, time, and pace, then converts miles and kilometers with the exact mile factor.

Formula

Pace = time / distance. Time = pace x distance. Distance = time / pace. Speed (distance per hour) = 60 / pace in minutes per unit. Convert between miles and kilometers with 1 mile = 1.609344 km.

The three relationships are simple. Pace is time divided by distance. Finish time is pace multiplied by distance. Distance is time divided by pace. Speed is 60 divided by your pace in minutes per unit, so a 6:00 per km pace is 10 km per hour. Miles and kilometers convert with the exact international mile, where 1 mile equals 1.609344 km, which is also how miles per hour and kilometers per hour relate.

Choosing what to solve for

Set the calculator to find pace, finish time, or distance, then fill in the other two values. Times are entered as hours:minutes:seconds and paces as minutes:seconds, and every answer comes back in both miles and kilometers so you can plan in one and race in the other. Switching between US and Metric only changes which unit leads; both are always shown.

Even pace and race distances

The math assumes one steady pace for the whole run, which is the fair way to compare efforts and set a target. The race shortcuts use the standard measured distances from World Athletics, so a half marathon and a marathon are exact rather than rounded. For a real race, add a small cushion for hills and late-race fatigue, and remember your easy training days should be slower than goal pace.

Example

Run 5.00 km in 30:00 and find your pace and speed.
  1. 1
    Pace per km30:00 / 5 = 6:00 per km.
  2. 2
    Pace per mile6:00 x 1.609344 = 9:39 per mile.
  3. 3
    Speed60 / 6.0 = 10.0 km/h, which is about 6.21 mph.
Result6:00 per km (9:39 per mile), about 10.0 km/h or 6.21 mph.

FAQ

How do I find the pace I need to hit a goal time?

Choose Finish time off, pick the race distance, and enter your goal time; the tool shows the pace per mile and per km to hold. For example, a 30:00 5K is a 6:00 per km pace, or 9:39 per mile, which is about 10.0 km/h.

Should I train in minutes per mile or per km?

Use whichever your watch and your races use. This tool shows both at once, so you can plan in one and race in the other. Switch the unit system to change which one leads.

Does this assume even splits?

Yes. It uses a steady, even pace across the whole distance. Real races drift with hills, wind, and fatigue, so treat the result as your average target and plan a small cushion for tough sections.

How do I match a treadmill speed to my pace?

Treadmills usually show mph or km/h. Solve for pace, read the speed shown with the result, and set the treadmill to that number. For example, 9:39 per mile is about 6.21 mph or 10.0 km/h.

Can I plan a marathon from a shorter run?

This tool converts a single distance, time, and pace; it does not predict across distances. For a goal marathon, pick Marathon, enter a realistic goal time, and use the pace as a target. Your everyday easy runs should be slower than that race pace.
