What does a mulch coverage calculator tell me?
Mulch is sold by volume (cubic feet per bag, cubic yards in bulk), but gardeners typically plan by area and depth. A mulch coverage calculator bridges the two: multiply area by depth to get volume, then divide by the bag size and round up.
The two common bed-input paths are: enter length and width for a rectangular bed, or enter a known area directly (useful for L-shaped or irregular beds). This calculator accepts both and adds them, so you can mix modes if your project spans different shapes.
Standard mulch depth for ornamental beds is 2 to 3 inches. Shallower application has less weed suppression; deeper than 4 inches can trap moisture against plant crowns and reduce soil oxygen. Mulch should be kept away from tree trunks and woody stems.
How to calculate mulch volume

volume (cu ft) = (area + length x width) x depth (in) / 12; bags = ceil(volume / bag size)
How the formula works
Effective area = area + length x width. Volume (cu ft) = effective area x (depth in inches / 12). Volume (cu yd) = volume (cu ft) / 27. Bags = ceil(volume cu ft / bag size cu ft).
The addition of area and length-times-width means you can enter only dimensions (set area = 0), only a known area (set length = 0 and width = 0), or both to handle beds with irregular shapes measured in two parts.
Depth conversion
Depth is entered in inches because mulch depth is conventionally measured that way in U.S. practice. Dividing by 12 converts inches to feet so the product of area (sq ft) and depth (ft) gives cubic feet.
Bag sizes
Bagged mulch is typically sold in 1.5, 2, or 3 cubic foot bags. Confirm the exact volume on the product label before buying; some brands vary. Bags are rounded up to the next whole unit; buy the full rounded quantity.
Metric
Length and width may be entered in meters; area in m2. The calculator converts to feet before computing. Results are in cu ft and cu yd.

FAQ
How deep should I apply mulch?
Most ornamental beds benefit from 2 to 3 inches of mulch. This depth suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and moderates soil temperature without suffocating roots. Four inches can be used in paths or areas with heavy weed pressure. Keep mulch at least 6 inches away from tree trunks and plant crowns; piling mulch against woody stems promotes rot and pest damage.
When should I buy bulk instead of bags?
Bulk mulch is typically less expensive per cubic yard when you need more than about 3 cubic yards and have delivery access. Bags are convenient for small areas, for projects with no delivery access, and when you want a specific product not available in bulk. Bulk yards usually sell by the cubic yard; bags are labeled in cubic feet. There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard.
Should I add extra for settling and waste?
Most landscapers add 5 to 10 percent to the calculated quantity to account for settling, irregular edges, and small spills during application. The calculator rounds up to whole bags, which provides a small built-in buffer. If your bed edges are not perfectly rectangular, consider adding one additional bag.
