What does a wood stain calculator tell me?

It turns a deck, fence, or siding area into the gallons of stain to buy for your coats and stain type.

Stain is sold by the gallon, but decks and fences are measured in area. A wood stain calculator bridges the two: multiply the area by the coat count, divide by the stain spread rate, add a waste allowance, and round up to a can size you can buy.

Stain differs from paint in one important way: it soaks into wood rather than sitting on top, so the surface matters enormously. Smooth, sealed boards cover close to the label figure, while rough-sawn, weathered, or never-finished wood is thirsty and can use far more, especially on the first coat. The stain type also drives coverage: thin transparent stains reach farther than film-building solid-color stains.

The presets seed a spread rate by opacity so the first screen is not blank, but they are only starting points. Read the label, judge the roughness of your wood, and lower the spread rate for thirsty surfaces. Also follow the product on coats: some penetrating stains want a single saturating coat and should not be overapplied.

Opacity sets the range. Transparent and toner stains are thin and can reach roughly 300 to 400 square feet per gallon on smooth wood. Semi-transparent stains land near 200 to 300. Solid-color stains build a film and cover less, often 150 to 250. The stain-type presets seed one of these figures; confirm against the label and lower it for rough or weathered wood.

Waste, roughness, and coats

The waste allowance covers brushing, the gaps between deck boards, and thirsty end grain. The first coat on bare or rough wood typically uses more than the second, so budget generously for new decks.
