What does deck board count mean?
Deck board count is the number of individual boards required to cover a rectangular deck surface. The key variables are the deck’s dimensions, the board’s actual face width, and the gap left between boards for drainage and seasonal movement. Because boards run along one axis and are spaced across the other, the calculation is essentially how many board-width-plus-gap units fit across the deck.
Two counts matter when ordering: the base count (boards theoretically needed with no waste) and the order count (base plus an allowance for end cuts, crown selection, and occasional defects). For a straightforward perpendicular layout, 10 percent waste is standard. Diagonal patterns require 15 to 20 percent because every board must be cut at both ends at a compound angle.
Board length is a separate variable because a board must span at least one joist bay end to end. For most residential decks, you order boards that span the full deck length in one piece; if the deck is longer than available board lengths, each row requires two or more pieces spliced at a joist.
How to calculate deck board count

How the formula works
Rows across the width = ceil(deck width in inches / (board width in + gap in)). Dividing deck width by the per-board pitch (face width plus gap) gives the exact number of board positions needed; ceiling-rounding ensures full coverage. Boards per row = ceil(deck length / board piece length). The base count is rows times boards per row. The order count = ceil(base count x (1 + waste% / 100)).
Why ceiling rounding
A board either fits or it does not. Fractional rows are physically impossible: you cut the last board to fit rather than leave the deck surface short. The ceiling function models this: if 25.6 rows are needed, you cut 26 boards. The same logic applies to the order count; half a board is waste.
Actual vs. nominal width
Use the actual face width, not the lumber nominal designation. A 5/4x6 softwood deck board has a nominal width of 6 inches but an actual face width of 5.5 inches. Composite decking face widths vary by brand and product line. Using the nominal width instead of the actual will undercount boards.
Gap
Gap spacing affects row count directly. A 1/8 inch gap is standard for pressure-treated softwood installed at normal moisture content. Composite boards have their own gap requirements published by the manufacturer. A gap of 0 returns a theoretical tight-fit count; in practice, some gap is always present.
Rounding and ordering
The order count rounds up to a whole board. Purchase in full-board multiples; suppliers do not sell partial boards. Check the waste percentage against your pattern: 10% for straight runs, 15-20% for diagonal.

FAQ
Should I use actual or nominal board width?
Use the actual face width, not the nominal lumber size. A 5/4x6 deck board has a nominal width of 6 inches but an actual face width of 5.5 inches. Composite decking widths vary by manufacturer. Measure a sample board or check the product specification sheet before entering the value.
What gap should I use?
A 1/8 inch gap is standard for pressure-treated softwood decking installed at typical moisture content; it allows drainage and some shrinkage. Some builders use 3/16 inch for wetter climates or green lumber that will shrink more. Composite manufacturers often specify their own gap requirements; check the product instructions. Entering 0 gives a tight-fit count with no drainage gaps.
Does this work for diagonal decking?
The calculator assumes boards run parallel to the deck length. Diagonal patterns at 45 degrees increase material needs by roughly 15 to 20 percent because every board must be cut at both ends at an angle and the effective span increases. Increase the waste percentage to 20 percent or more for a diagonal layout, or calculate the actual board length using the Pythagorean theorem for your specific bay size.
How much waste should I account for?
Ten percent is the standard allowance for a straightforward perpendicular deck. Diagonal or herringbone patterns typically need 15 to 20 percent. Boards with visible crowns or defects that must be sorted around can add another 5 to 10 percent. Better to have boards left over than to run short: most suppliers charge a restocking fee for returns, but a partial board is unusable.
